Casualties: Unknown Endings: What Is Confirmed So Far

Casualties: Unknown endings explained: the confirmed story goal, the unreleased final layers, what the demo does at layer 5, and what is still speculation.

Casualties: Unknown Endings: What Is Confirmed So Far

Casualties: Unknown is built around a descent, and the ending is the thing the descent is for. The problem is that the demo stops at layer 5 and the full game's final layers are not out yet. Any page that lists "all endings" with names and choices is guessing.

This page separates what is confirmed from what is reasonable inference, so you know what you are actually reading.

The confirmed goal

The Steam description is explicit: your captors have tasked you with retrieving lost cargo on a foreign planet, and the game has 11 layers. The feature list promises that you will "uncover the truth".

The lore confirms the shape of that goal:

  • The planet is a Corporation testing ground.
  • The player is a Sawian, a bioengineered test subject.
  • A cargo teleport went wrong, scattering technology across the layers.
  • The Corporation wants the crucial technology back.
  • The player descends to retrieve it.

That is the spine of the story. The ending is the resolution of that retrieval, not a choice between factions.

The final layers

Two layers are named in the game's localization files but are not playable in the demo:

  • Layer 10: Where We Must Reach — described as the location of the target technology.
  • Layer 11: Crimson Ascent — the ascent back to the surface.

There is also a separate Earth location, described in the files as "a lab, somewhere...", which is likely related to the endings.

That is the strongest evidence for the ending structure: you reach the technology at layer 10, climb back through layer 11, and the resolution happens on Earth, in a lab.

Treat that as inference, not a walkthrough. The layers are unreleased, and the developers can change them.

What the demo does

The demo has five layers. Descending past Overgrown Depths does not end the game; it loops you back to Deeper Gravel Lands.

That loop is the demo's content boundary, not an ending. There is no cutscene, no choice and no "you win" screen at layer 5. If you are looking for the demo's ending, the loop is it.

The demo also has one playable character, Experiment. Milky and Dune are marked unreleased, so their story content cannot be the demo's ending either.

Why there is no ending list yet

An ending list requires the full game. The demo does not contain:

  • Layer 10 or 11.
  • The Earth lab sequence.
  • The final cargo retrieval.
  • Any ending choice or epilogue.

Anything beyond that would be invented. The honest answer is that the ending is not available to play, and the community does not have it either.

What to expect at launch

Based on the confirmed layers and the store description, a reasonable expectation:

  1. Descent through 11 layers. Each layer is 300 m; the full run is 3,300 m of vertical travel.
  2. Cargo retrieval. The objective at layer 10.
  3. Ascent. Layer 11 is named "Crimson Ascent", which implies a return trip rather than a one-way descent.
  4. Earth resolution. The lab location suggests a debrief, a betrayal or a reveal about the Corporation.
  5. One canonical ending, possibly with variations. There is no evidence of a faction system or a branching choice system.

Do not buy the game expecting multiple endings. The store page promises "uncover the truth", not "choose your ending".

The story so far

The lore that is confirmed:

  • The Corporation created the Sawians through bioengineering, then hid them from the government.
  • The gray planet was chosen as a secret base because it is far from Earth.
  • Teleportation technology made the evacuation possible.
  • The cargo is crucial technology that the Corporation needs back.
  • The player is one of millions of Sawians sent to retrieve it.

The characters guide covers the playable Sawians, and the progression guide covers the layer structure.

Will there be multiple endings?

Unknown. The game has no confirmed choice system, no faction reputation that carries to an ending, and no advertised branching narrative. The trader reputation system is local to each survivor, not a global faction.

The most likely structure is a single ending with lore variations based on what you found. That is a guess, and it is labeled as one.

How to "finish" the demo

If you want closure before launch:

  1. Reach Overgrown Depths (layer 5).
  2. Defeat or avoid the Elder Thornback.
  3. Reach the bottom of the layer.
  4. Trigger the loop back to layer 2.

That is the demo's full content. There is no secret ending hidden behind the loop.

What to watch after launch

  • Patch notes for ending-related fixes.
  • The achievement list, if achievements are added; they often reveal the ending structure.
  • The developer's Steam announcements for post-launch content.
  • The wiki's lore pages, which update faster than guide sites.

This page will be updated when the full game is out and the ending can be verified.

There is no ending in the demo

Layer 5 loops back to layer 2. Any page listing the game endings today is guessing.
